Planar nearrings grew out of the geometric success of the planar nearfields and have found numerous applications to various branches of mathematics as well as to coding theory, cryptography, the design of statistical experiments, families of mutually orthogonal Latin squares and constructing planes with circles having radius and centre even. Most topics in near-ring and near-field theory are treated here, along with an extensive introduction to the theory. There are two invited lectures: ''Non-Commutative Geometry, Near-Rings and Near-Fields'' which indicates the relevance of near-rings and near-fields for geometry, while ''Pseudo-Finite Near-Fields'' shows the impressive power of model theoretic methods.

Let me start with some historical remarks on: “60 years research on Nearrings and Nearfields in Hamburg”. One of the strongest impulses in the area of nearrings and nearfields started at a Hamburg. In HANS ZASSENHAUS( – ) finished his dissertation: “Kennzeichnung endlicher linearer Gruppen als Permutationsgruppen” which was published in in the “Uber Cited by: 1. Both right and left near-rings occur in the literature; for instance, the book of Pilz uses right near-rings, while the book of Clay uses left near-rings. An immediate consequence of this one-sided distributive law is that it is true that 0⋅x = 0 but it is not necessarily true that x⋅0 = 0 for any x in N.
